DAISY LEIGH-PHIPPARD WRITES

Welcome to My Journalist Portfolio

Starting off in informal book reviews on a personal blog in 2013, my journalistic

work has expanded in multiple directions. I joined my university's newspaper and becoming

it's Chief Writer, started being given Advanced Reader's Copies of novels from publishers for review,

and became a contributor and then staff writer to online film magazine Screen Queens.

My journalistic work now focuses on film, from feminist theory, independent international

films to the joy of mainstream cinema. Interviews, articles or reviews, I can do it.

FIGHT LIKE A GIRL: WOMEN WARRIORS AND THEIR ARMOUR // SCREEN QUEENS

October 2018

Who doesn’t love seeing a girl clad head to toe in protective gear with a sword in her hand? Historically accurate or fantastically decadent, armour is used to show strength, power and status – but it’s rare to see it on a woman.

SCREENWRITERS HENRIETTA & JESSICA ASHWORTH AT THE FROM PAGE TO SCREEN FILM FESTIVAL // BOURNEMOUTH FILM SCHOOL

BUMF REVIEWS ALICE // BUMF

December 2017

Opening night always has a gravity to it in the theatre; it’s the first time away from the comforts of asking for a line, or being able to take just a little longer on that one fiddly costume change. It’s when things get real, and that comes with a lot of pressure – and, of course, excitement.

AUTHOR IAN MCEWAN AT THE FROM PAGE TO SCREEN FILM FESTIVAL // BOURNEMOUTH FILM SCHOOL

April 2018

At the From Page to Screen Film Festival in Bridport, I got the chance to interview award-winning author and screenwriter Ian McEwan about seeing his work adapted for cinema, finding the right people to do it and what his experience on set was.

THE PRINCESS AND THE THIEF: THE HANDMAIDEN AND DISOBEDIENT HEROINES // SCREEN QUEENS

July 2018

Chan-Wook Park’s psychological thriller meets historical intrigue film swiped the foreign language category pretty much across the board in 2016. While it’s a feat of technical brilliance and visual genius, it’s the way Park uses his story to force his audience to question their assumptions that made me speechless the first time I saw it.
